Finding a Club — Learn With Other Pilots

A good flying field and a little experienced help can save a lot of frustration.

You Do Not Have to Learn This Alone

A local club can give you more than a runway. It can give you somebody who has already made the mistake you are about to make and is willing to point it out before the airplane leaves the ground.

Every club is different. Some have formal instructors and buddy boxes. Some are a group of pilots who help more informally. Contact them before visiting so you know when people will be there and what the field requires.

What I Would Ask

  • When are members usually at the field?
  • Does the club have instructors or a beginner program?
  • What AMA, membership, or insurance requirements apply?
  • Are there limits on airplane size, noise, or power systems?
  • What do visitors need to know about the runway, flight line, airspace, and FRIA status?

Have Somebody Check the Maiden

I strongly recommend having an experienced pilot inspect and maiden a new airplane when possible. They can check the center of gravity, control directions, rates, hardware, and stabilization response before launch.

That does not mean every new airplane is badly built, and it does not guarantee a perfect flight. It gives you another set of eyes at the exact moment when a missed detail matters most.

When You Visit

Introduce yourself and say you are new. Stay behind the flight line until somebody explains the field. Ask before turning on a transmitter or setting an airplane on the runway, and listen for the calls pilots make before takeoff, landing, and walking onto the field.

Most RC pilots enjoy helping somebody get started. If the first group is not a good fit, that does not mean the whole hobby is like that. Try another day, another club, a hobby shop, or a local online group.

No club nearby? The RC Plane Lab Discord cannot take over the transmitter, but it can help with setup questions and may help you find pilots in your area.
